Alliance Institute is 501(c)(3) organization that provides community organizing training and capacity building assistance to non-profits and community-based organizations in New Orleans and across the gulf south. With a primary goal of increasing economic and social equity through community engagement, Alliance Institute works to provide individuals, families, and organizations with the skills and tools they need to fully participate in the decision making processes that affect them in their homes, neighborhoods, and communities.

Alliance Institute Planning Human Rights Organizing Curriculum

Alliance Institute would like to welcome Mr. Mark Sousa of Malmo University.  Mr. Sousa is a student at the Faculty of Culture and Society at Malmot and is serving an international internship.

Founded in 1988, Malmo is one of Sweden’s largest universities.  Working with Alliance Institute staff, Mr. Sousa will be helping to develop an organizing curriculum that emphasizes and develops a human rights perspective.  Following the catastrophic hurricane season of 2005 and the corporate focused response to the BP oil drilling disaster the human rights have been noticeably absent from much of the conversation.

Alliance Institute Partners with Kerry Kennedy Delegation for Tour of Coastal Communities Impacted by the BP Oil Disaster

On June 4 and 5, 2010, Alliance Institute partnered with the Gulf Coast Fund to host the Kerry Kennedy and the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights a tour of gulf coast areas impacted by the drilling disaster.  The two day event covered New Orleans and Barataria, Louisiana; Biloxi, MS; and Bayou LaBatre/Coden, AL.

Friday, June 4th started with presentations by the Louisiana Bucket Brigade and the Gulf Restoration Network.  The organizations outlined the problems facing gulf coast communities as well as the coastal environment itself.  Everything from reports coming in from fishermen and their families regarding health concerns to the impact of the disaster on sperm whale and other species living in the coastal waters was discussed to help lay the framework for the visits that were to come.
