Improved Health Care Access Closer to Reality in Three Coastal Louisiana Towns

In Alliance Institute's ongoing work to bring access to health care to Barataria, Crown Point, and Lafitte, LA, the way seems to be opening for success!  After several changes, the Jefferson Community Health Care Clinic has a new CEO – Yakima Keels Black.  Mrs. Black started on February 28, 2011 and made Alliance Institute one of the first groups with whom to meet.  Following several meetings in the month of March, Mrs. Black has committed herself to working with Alliance Institute to bring the project to fruition.  We are currently in discussions toward the opening of a clinic in Lafitte that will also serve Barataria and Crown Point.

Keeping Gulf Coast Recovery on the Front Burner

On October 12, 2010 Alliance Institute met in Washington, DC with representatives from the Religious Action Center, the Jewish Council on Public Affairs, the Catholic Social Justice Lobby-NETWORK, Oxfam and others to discuss moving forward on Gulf Coast Recovery.  With the BP oil drilling disaster fading from the national media and many areas still reeling from the 2005 hurricane season, many organizations across the region and nationally are looking at opportunities to impact the lame duck Congress as well as the incoming Congress.

Three issues that are being focused on are the need for community oversight in the recovery, a need for infrastructure and coastal restoration jobs for citizens of the region, and an emphasis on developing a sustainable and green economy as part of the recovery process.  Alliance Institute and others maintain that the Gulf Coast can be looked at as a pilot program for an economic recovery via these issues.
