VIET Plays Key Role in Health Clinic Expansion Project in Louisiana

VIET hosts a community meeting on the Gulf Region Health Outreach Program.By La'Keidra Mitchell

Vietnamese Initiatives in Economic Training (VIET) has been making significant strides as the designated Louisiana community based organization for the Gulf Regional Health Outreach Program (GRHOP). VIET is engaging oil spill-impacted communities in seven Louisiana coastal parishes. Because the foundation of GRHOP began in Louisiana several years ago, the initial outreach process has progressed at much quicker pace than in the other project states.

VIET is very well known throughout New Orleans and under the leadership of Cyndi Nguyen the organization is already deeply engaged in many community coalitions and activities. VIET started strong in their GRHOP community coalition involvement with a November 2012 meeting in the New Orleans East community. The meeting introduced GRHOP to community members and asked for feedback. Subsequent meetings were scheduled and partners have remained engaged and excited about GRHOP through VIET’s interactive approaches of outreach. A tour has been scheduled of the NOELA clinic and community feedback cards have been created for distribution in the area.
